Stress is a part of everyone’s lives, which is why we dedicate a whole month to Stress Awareness every year. In 2024, we thought we’d share our tried and tested strategies for mastering stress in the workplace. Because it isn’t just good for your peace of mind; it’s a vital life-skill.

Understanding Workplace Stress

Before you can understand stress you must first acknowledge it. Employers should be leading by example by being open and authentic about their own experiences. Workers will  feel more at ease opening up themselves, spurring a wider conversation and a more open minded and compassionate workplace. Knowing the early signs of stress helps us all to start tackling these issues head-on together.

As an apprentice, learning to manage work pressure is a key part of your learning journey. It matters that you can quickly identify stress when you are feeling it and also that you feel able to talk and get support from those around you.

Feeling challenged at work a is a good thing; it pushes us to grow and thrive. But when the push turns to shove, and we face too much for too long, it can start to have a negative impact on us. Managing stress isn’t about dodging challenges but rather navigating them with greater ease for success in all we do professionally. This starts by setting and understanding our own boundaries. It’s just as it’s important for employers to consider their employee’s job roles carefully,  so that their workers don’t get crushed under the weight of expectations too large.

Identifying Your Stress Triggers

Being aware of our triggers helps us mitigate them. Think: what keeps you motivated at work versus what saps your energy? Be mindful of what makes you tick. Noticing these stress-makers is step one in sorting them out. Recognise emotions; do tight deadlines leave you cold sweats? Does talking with certain people spike your blood pressure?

Developing Resilience in the Office

Being an apprentice, you’ve already shown a healthy sense of ambition. After all, you’re working towards a qualification, on top of having to navigate the everyday stresses of working life. So, it’s vital you know how to cope when times get tough. Something to consider is resilience training. it can be a really helpful for gearing us up to handle stress by providing us with lots of different tools that help us to keep our cool on those tougher days at work. Ask your manager if this is something they can provide for your professional development.

Chat with your colleagues openly about the hurdles you face daily—maybe it’s deadlines, or does teamwork trip them up? Then together you can craft a plan that targets these issues head-on.

It’s important for bosses to show that staying sturdy under pressure matters, everyone else will follow suit and make it part of your workplace culture—one where individuals don’t just survive but thrive when faced with challenges. It’s important to remember that it’s not enough to just be coping. You need to feel valued and satisfied in whatever it is that you do.

Crafting an Effective Decompression Routine

Ending a tough day with a calming post-work ritual is a really good way to turn things around. Set aside ten minutes to just breathe deeply; it tells your body to relax. Then try to focus on some ‘me time’ – maybe read or soak in a warm bath for fifteen minutes. Forget about your phone for 15 minutes too if you can.

That helps clear your mind. Try jotting down three good bits from the day – focusing on positives boosts mood and outlook. And if you’ve been sitting all day – try to get moving a bit, even if it’s just stretching out stiff muscles before bed.

These simple steps done daily can forge powerful habits over time, helping to eliminate any stress built up during your day.

Building a Supportive Work Network

The power of a strong work network is unmatched. Try to seek out colleagues who share your goals and values. It’s about finding those key people you can trust with ideas or worries—people who will listen when things get tough but also cheer for your wins.

Build this by being there for others too; it’s give and take! Offer help without waiting to be asked. Share skills and knowledge freely – it comes back around.

Also remember, diverse networks spark creativity so reach outside your usual circle.

Lastly, don’t forget regular catch-ups are vital—they keep connections alive in our fast-paced world!

Staying Mindful

Stress Awareness Month pushes us to take look at stress in our jobs.

Staying mindful of your stress levels isn’t just vital; it’s achievable with the right approach and strategy. Simple steps go far – think regular breaks, deep breathing exercises, and setting clear goals.
