Reflections from AELP 2026: A Sector Driven by Purpose

As I make the long journey home from the AELP Conference — on probably the hottest day of the year so far  — I’ve been reflecting on the past couple of days.

Beyond the simple joy of seeing people face-to-face again (and not having to say “you’re on mute”), it was fantastic to spend time with so many passionate people across the skills and apprenticeship sector.

There’s something powerful about being in a room full of individuals who genuinely care about what they do — people who are committed to improving outcomes for learners and employers alike.

Key Reflections from the Conference

A few themes and insights really stood out:

Funding Pressures and Priorities

The 25% co-investment surcharge for levy payers exceeding their levy remains a concern — particularly in terms of its impact on opportunities for under-25s.
At the same time, there were clear signals that future funding priorities will increasingly focus on:

  • Apprenticeships for under-25s
  • Provision that supports growth across priority sectors

Achievement and Accountability

Encouragingly, achievement rates have increased by 14% since 2022 — a huge credit to providers across the sector 👏

With an ambition to exceed 70% in the coming years, it feels likely that the Apprenticeship Accountability Framework will evolve alongside this — potentially bringing higher expectations and thresholds.

From a Ginger Nut Training perspective, I’m particularly proud that our consistent ~80% achievement rates over recent years are helping push that benchmark higher.

Reviewing Standards and Funding Bands

There was also a strong message around Skills England’s role in reviewing high-volume standards, with potential funding band adjustments coming as early as October.

One notable example is the Business Administrator standard — a widely delivered programme with a high proportion of under-25 learners — which has not seen a funding uplift since the 2017 reforms. In my view, this is an area that is in real need of review.

Inspiration and Energy Across the Sector

A particular highlight was hearing from AELP speakers and contributors — including an inspiring message from MP Hannah Spencer — reinforcing the importance of keeping learning practical, relevant, and aligned to real job roles.

The consistent message was clear: we must ensure learners are equipped not just to participate in the workforce, but to truly thrive in an increasingly volatile and rapidly changing world.

Final Thoughts

Despite the challenges our sector continues to face, the overriding feeling across the conference was one of resilience and determination.

A huge thank you to AELP, the speakers, exhibitors, and everyone who made the event such a success.
