We ask learners and employers to look at which progression course is what they are working towards whilst enrolling in the foundation course, with the selection of the course at month 7, near completion of the foundation. We are, of course, open to this changing as the course progresses.

Foundation Course details

Typical duration to gateway: 8 months
Maximum funding: £4,000

As a Level 2 Foundation Apprenticeship, Hardware, Network and Infrastructure (FA0004) is a high-value hybrid programme combining eight months of technical learning with workplace immersion. Designed within the Digital route, it equips young learners with core technical knowledge and practical skills to support and maintain both physical and virtual IT systems, aligning with real-world employer needs across sectors.

Apprentices undertake meaningful, hands-on roles supporting operational systems—monitoring infrastructure performance, offering technical support to internal and external users, diagnosing issues, and assisting with testing and maintenance. This real-world engagement is complemented by structured employability skills and behaviours—such as professional communication, team working, adaptability, and health and safety awareness—and embedded functional English and maths, ensuring holistic development and compliance with apprenticeship standards.

Assessment is intentionally proportionate and progression-focused, balancing a formal knowledge test with situational practical assessments that reflect genuine workplace application—whether through simulated or observed tasks, portfolios, or presentations. This ensures timely, meaningful achievement of Occupational Standards, positioning learners either to progress into Level 2 or Level 3 apprenticeships, or enter employment with verified competence and confidence.

Hardware, network and infrastructure operatives are found in organisations large and small, in all sectors, and within public, private and voluntary organisations.

Organisations rely on computers and communications systems in all areas of their operations. The apprentice will work with others to ensure the optimal performance and maintenance of these systems.

The apprentice will work on IT and or telecommunications which are physical and or virtual. They will support the monitoring and maintenance of the systems and or platforms to maximise productivity and user experience.

They will carry out fundamental duties, including technical support to customers, both internal and external, using multiple communication channels. They will also support problem resolution and assist with the testing and monitoring of issues.

This Foundation Apprenticeship requires a minimum 187 hours off-the-job learning. Upon successful completion, the apprentice will be competent in the knowledge, skills and behaviours outlined in this standard. Someone who completes some or all of this content will be part-way through a journey to a more specialist occupation. Taking another apprenticeship after this one is one way of progressing
